Peter Huang/ WebJuice / Director of Business Operations

I’m the Director Business Operations at WebJuice. From negotiating contracts with our various service providers to handling requests and providing the tools that help our operations team, my responsibility is to make sure that the business runs as smoothly as possible and do whatever it takes to keep it that way.

I graduated from UC Berkeley in 2000 with a degree in Political Science. My first job was at a Big 4 Accounting/Consulting Firm where I helped establish the firm’s practice for working with startup companies. After that, I took a job as Director of International Sales and Marketing at a semiconductor chip testing company in Taiwan. My time overseas was a character building experience and after a year and a half, I decided that I had plenty of character. After taking a few months off to regain my sanity and kick the habit of sleeping with a laptop on my pillow so I could respond to e-mail at all hours, I saw the light known was WebJuice.

Where were you born? I was born about 5 minutes from the office in Sunnyvale, California.

Where were you raised? I was raised in Sunnyvale and have been in the Bay Area for most of my life. Go Bears!

Who do you think had the most influence on your life and why? Besides my parents, the boss at my first job who took the time to mentor me and give me advice on how to interact with people as well as the work environment.

The aforementioned person, is their influence used/applied at NextInternet? Yes, I use the “Jensen’s Life Lessons” daily. My job requires me to deal with a wide range of people and personalities and the Life Lessons come in quite handy.

What part of your upbringing or life experiences led you to working at a Start-up? I knew that I wanted to work at a smaller company as my previous experiences were at large and mid-sized companies. When you work at companies with that size, there is a certain degree of politicking involved that makes work tougher to bear with.

What do you like about working at a start-up/NextInternet? I like most that we’re a results-based company. At the end of the day, it’s not about how much face time you put in but how effectively you got the job done.

If you had to describe your day to day in the office in 3 sentences how would you? You don’t know what to expect when you show up at the office everyday but for once, it’s a good thing. There is probably way too much laughter going on in what is supposed to be a workplace. This place is awesome.

What valuable lessons have learned in working at NextInternet? I hate to use the cliché but you can’t judge a book by its cover. We have such a wide variety of people and interests here that a random conversation can uncover a coworker’s passion for classical music or his love of HBO or his fondness for reminiscing about the good ol’ days from companies gone by. And what makes it great is that these different people have come together to form a vibrant company.

If you had to tell a new employee of NextInternet what to expect in their first two weeks what would it be? It is normal to laugh or hear this much laughter in a workplace. Who knew that work could be this fun?

Have you worked with any members of staff before at other companies? No, I just went to high school with Eddy Go and found out he worked here during my first interview.

What types of companies have you worked with before?  (small, large, etc.) My previous companies were of the large and mid-sized variety. Those experiences have taught me to put in the most so I can get the most out of the places I work for.

In your own words:

It’s amazing to me that this collection of different personalities can come together to form a strong and vibrant company. WebJuice is a place where the normal rules don’t necessarily apply. I can honestly say that in the one-and-a-half years that I’ve worked at the company, I’ve never woken up in the morning and said, “Crap, I have to go to work.” Considering where I’ve been previously with other jobs, it’s a pretty sweet thing to say.
