Albert Chen / NextClick Media / President

Albert Chen is the President of NextClick Media, a full-service customer acquistion advertising network created by Next Internet. Albert's previous experience with startups include being the founder of two companies: a digital music service company called Gig, and a financial market data software company named GlobalCast Communications.

Albert brings his expertise of building companies, and his knowledge of the market to NextClick Media, determined to make it an even stronger entity than it has become. As for the future of Next Internet, Albert projects that within five years, "Next will be recognized as the leader in owning leading positions in a number of Internet markets."

In addition to starting companies from the ground up, Albert has dazzled in nightclub promotions and even dabbled at bartending. In fact, he has spent so much of his time working that he has become one the proud few who can affectionately refer to work as a hobby, "What can I say? Work is rewarding."

Albert initiated his entrepreneurial pursuit while earning a Bachelor's degree at the University of California in Berkeley, where he also met many of the colleagues he continues to work with today.

In His Own Words
Born in the Bronx. Raised in New Jersey. Son of two engineers. Went to Berkeley, studied Computer Science, Economics, Rhetoric and Business. Did accounting for the Haas School of Business while in college – was thinking .. all these accountants here and they want me to do their accounting??? Weird. Started a night club promotion business. About to graduate Berkeley, I decided NOT to dedicate my life to running a nightclub (almost considered it) and started a “technology” company in 1994. Raised my first $1m in venture funding when I was 21. Keep in mind, this is before the Internet was invented. No Netscape. No Yahoo. Raised another $7.5m before I was 26 from venture guys and Lucent, Novell…. My company built networking technology for financial institutions for massive scale replication of financial market data between distributed systems. Basically allowing stock market trades to by synchronized among thousands of servers. Now owned by Tibco.

Afterwards…I started a second company doing very similar stuff for digital music in 1997. Raised another $6m more in venture funding from a bunch of guys including Sony Music. Built systems for companies like Sony and MTV who wanted to build online music services, digital jukeboxes in bars.... Napster came out, got sued by the big music companies.. Decided it was time to get deeper in technology. Went to work with a Venture Fund to incubate wireless companies – worked on wireless data systems to bridge IP services and wireless telecom backend. Bunch of super smart people including former VP / CTOs from the largest wireless carriers in the US. Smart guys, but bad ROI. You need at least $40m to be a player with carriers AND there are only 5 customers in the US. Not a good space for me. Decided STILL didn’t know enough about technology and went to go turnaround a Optical Networking company that literally bought glass, coated it, cut it and built modules that dynamically split out wavelengths of light without disrupting the light stream in DWDM optical networking systems. Really hard stuff. Actually, no software – all physics.

Decided that I now knew TOO much about technology and couldn’t relate to normal people. So I bought a bar in San Francisco. My ex-GF brought Ken to the bar one night.

Now, I am the President NextClick.

This is an amazing company in an amazing industry. In Feb 2006, we started what was to evolve into one of the leaders of Customer Acquisition. NextClick Adteractive CA clients include Blockbuster, Netflix, Columbia House, Citi… These clients look to us to build offers / buy media / bring them customers. We are better at knowing how to build these offer sites, where to get quality traffic, how to convert and monetize customers. Our goal is to be the leading Customer Acquisition Network - the place where major brand advertisers go when they want high quality customers. The internet is a tricky place when it comes to accepting purchases with a credit card. We are a Visa PCI compliant service and have in depth knowledge of where quality traffic lives on the Internet.
